FAQs
Are the balloons guaranteed to fly?
Hot air balloons are completely weather dependent, and flights can only happen when conditions are safe. Wind speed, wind direction, and other weather factors determine whether balloons are able to launch.
While we always hope for perfect flying conditions, balloon launches cannot be guaranteed.
The weather is beautiful, why aren't the balloons flying?
All ballooning activities are weather dependent. Hot air ballooning is considered a fair-weather sport, but conditions that look nice on the ground are not always safe for flight.
Balloons cannot fly in the rain, and winds must be light for safe launches and landings. Ideal wind speeds are 3–5 MPH. As wind speeds increase beyond 8–10 MPH, it becomes unlikely that balloons will be able to fly safely. Pilots must also consider wind direction and conditions at different altitudes, not just what we feel on the ground.
Before each scheduled launch, pilots attend a pilot briefing where weather conditions are reviewed and a decision is made about whether the field will open for flying. Sometimes flights may be put on hold to see if conditions improve. If the field is open for flying, pilots are free to fly, but the final decision to launch is always at each pilot’s discretion based on safety.
Flight updates are shared on our Facebook page and announced on the field before each scheduled launch. Please keep in mind that internet service at the field can be slow due to the large number of attendees, so social media updates may take a little time to appear.
We kindly ask everyone to be considerate on our Facebook page. The event is run entirely by volunteers, and the pilots and organizers are just as disappointed as guests when balloons are unable to fly. Safety will always come first in our decision-making.
Your event schedule says the balloons will launch at 6:00 PM and it’s almost 7:30 PM. Why haven’t they flown yet?
Hot air balloons are completely weather dependent, and safety is always the top priority for pilots and passengers. While the schedule may list a planned launch time, pilots must wait for safe wind speeds and directions before they can inflate and launch.
Sometimes this means delaying a launch while pilots monitor conditions, waiting for winds to calm or shift. If safe conditions never develop, balloons may not be able to fly at all.
We know the wait can be frustrating, but balloon pilots are committed to flying only when it is safe to do so. When conditions cooperate, the show is well worth the wait!
What happens if the weather is bad?
Hot air balloons are extremely weather dependent, and safety is always the top priority for pilots and passengers. If winds or weather conditions are not safe for flying, balloons may not be able to launch.
Even if balloons cannot fly, there is still plenty to enjoy at the event, including live music, cold beer, and bounce houses for the kids, so the fun continues regardless of the weather.
Please note that the $5 admission donation at the gate is non-refundable, as proceeds from the event support Breakthrough T1D and Camp Hertko Hollow.
